Ants

There are dozens of different species of ants in New Zealand, but the common ants found around peoples homes are the Argentine Ant and the White Footed Ant.

Ants commonly feed on sugars and proteins so it is crucial to keep food zipped up, locked up, and put away in order to prevent infestations.

Ants are by far, the hardest pest to treat around houses as the nests can be found outside in the soil, under concrete paths, in ceilings, and inside the wall cavities.

In late Summer, and sometime at other times during the year, swarms of winged male and female ants emerge to mate and disperse. Treatment for this type of problem is something that is also really hard to guarantee.

Ants have a way of excreting and leaving a pheremone behind which is why we all see the ant trails or the ants travelling in the same areas. If we can locate these trails or understand the ants are coming from (or likely to come from) then our pest technicians will be better equipped to target the nest on the first attempt.

Control
  • Clean up food scraps, spilt sugars and fat in the kitchen etc.. Zip and seal all sugary foods in containers with tight fitting lids.
  • be wary of where you keep your rubbish bins and compost bins as they are a haven for ants.
  • seal cracks around foundations, drains etc (although this can be hard to do as the ants can get in pretty much anywhere)

Treatment

At PestAway, we apply a variety of different treatments, mostly combing all of them in one treatment (depending on the infestation)
  • Apply a residual misting leaving a thin layer of pesticide on the walls which will deter and/or kill the ant on contact
  • Applying a permethrin dust in hard to reach areas such as behind kitchen whiteware
  • Granular insecticide that kills ants via contact action. This is effective in turf and lawns.
  • Thermal Fogging. Such is the nature of ants and their willingness to have nests in the most inaccessible areas such as wall cavities, thermal fogging can sometimes be the only way to flush them out and kill them along the way. the fog agent mixed with the appropriate chemical, will seal into the cracks and crevices in the ceilings, walls and floors to get to the ants that normal spraying or misting can not.
  • Exterior spraying using Biff Ant is a new residual insecticide designed specifically in New Zealand for New Zealand conditions. Stands up to wash off, UV light degradation, heat and variable pH and can be used on all external surfaces.
  • Gel Baiting is a less intrusive option to attack problem ants, especially in areas of public health importance. No Odour or stand down time needed, making this option suitable for Offices, restaurants, hotels, hospitals etc.
