Bird Control

Although we all love to see birds flying around, they can and do create certain problems in and around buildings. Nesting and their bird droppings are not only unsightly, but carry health risks too, carrying diseases such as salmonella.

Give us a call for a site visit and we will advise on a solution.

The number one bird problem we face in the urban environment is the Feral Pigeon. Others include Seagulls, Sparrows and Starlings.

Feral Pigeons generally nest in small, flat areas away from the ground such as building ledges, air conditioning units or window sills. Basically, they will inhabit anywhere that offer them shelter from the climate.

Pigeons area very skilled at finding food and water sources, and rarely have trouble finding a source in the city.

Pigeon control is really important not only due to the health risks that they purpose, but to the structural damage to property. The Uric acid in their faeces is highly corrosive and can cause damage to metals and the like (e.g.. Heat Pump Inverters). Debris from flocks can also build up and block drains which can cause flooding and other plumbing issues. Nesting materials and other debris has caused failures in machinery, especially Heat Pump Units which are a prime spot for nesting. Other frequent problems caused by faeces and debris are falls and slips, and a general unclean environment which is not a good commercial image for a particular business.

These flying rats, are also responsible for a host of serious diseases, such as Histoplasmosis, Encephalitis, Salmonella, Meningitis and many more. They also carry parasites such as fleas, mites and lice.

Control Methods

The best way to get rid of your bird problem or to bird proof your property is to use bird netting. Although costly, it is a permanent solution to prevent access to this area by birds. By attaching anchor points and tension cable around the area,  5mm netting (for smaller birds, and 20mm netting (for pigeons and seagulls) are attached to the tension wire to provide a permanent access free bird zone.

It is not always simple so an integrated approach should be used to tackle these pests. Coupling a few techniques and a maintenance program will ensure a long lasting bird free property. Such techniques other than netting, are bird spikes, wires, shock wire, bird repellant gels (aka 'hot foot') for ledges, and a short term fix with that of marksmen shooting.
